Herb Spotlight: Oregano Essential Oil – Nature's Powerful Defender
Share
One of the essential oils we never like to be without in our home is Oregano Essential Oil.
Tiny but mighty, oregano oil has been treasured for centuries and is known for its impressive antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and immune-supporting properties. Because it contains powerful natural compounds such as carvacrol and thymol, it has become one of our favorite additions to our natural wellness toolkit.
Here are a few ways we use it in our household:
During cold and flu season
When someone isn't feeling their best, we sometimes add one drop of a food-grade oregano essential oil to a warm cup of tea (always following the manufacturer's directions and ensuring the oil is labeled for internal use). We often combine this with soothing herbs and local honey.
We also use it in the diffuser when sick as it's benefits are powerful when used this way too.
In the diffuser
We enjoy diffusing oregano with Lemon Essential Oil to help freshen the air, especially during the winter months. Lemon adds a bright, uplifting aroma while oregano brings its cleansing qualities.
For athlete's foot
I also created a diluted topical blend for my son's athlete's foot using oregano essential oil mixed with a carrier oil. It worked wonderfully for us and became one of our favorite natural remedies. Because oregano oil is very strong, it should always be properly diluted before applying to the skin.
Here is a blend for this.
DIY Cleansing Foot Oil
- 2 tablespoons jojoba or fractionated coconut oil
- 2 drops oregano essential oil
- 3 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- 2 drops Lavender Essential Oil
Mix well and apply to clean feet twice daily. Wash hands after application and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
More amazing benefits of oregano essential oil include:
- Supports a healthy immune system
- Helps combat unwanted bacteria and fungi
- Rich in protective antioxidants
- May help support respiratory wellness when diffused
- Can be used in natural household cleaning blends
- A popular addition to natural wellness routines during seasonal challenges
A Few Important Safety Tips
Because oregano essential oil is so powerful:
- Always dilute before applying to the skin.
- Perform a patch test before wider use.
- Avoid contact with eyes and other sensitive areas.
- If you are pregnant, nursing, have certain medical conditions, or are taking medications, consult your healthcare provider before use.
- Only ingest oregano essential oil if it is specifically labeled by the manufacturer as safe for internal use, and always follow the recommended directions.
Nature has given us incredible plants to support our well-being, and oregano is certainly one of them. We believe herbs work best as part of a healthy lifestyle not as a replacement for medical care when it's needed.
